How to Make Your Makeup Last

Make Your Makeup Last

How many times have you spent hours in front of the mirror applying makeup only to look at yourself a few hours later and discover smudged makeup or look like you never applied any at all?

Every woman wants their makeup to last all day whether it is for a special occasion such as a wedding, reunion, photo shoot, night out with the girls, or simply just her day-to-day look.

The following makeup artist tips may be useful to help make your look last all day:

  • Wash your face with a very gentle cleanser suited for your skin type.
  • Apply an oil-free moisturizer to your face and allow it to sink in completely (for at least 5 minutes) prior to applying your makeup.
  • Apply an all- over primer all over your face.
  • Apply cream or liquid foundation with a sponge only in the areas that you really need it.
  • Apply a loose powder with a puff for more control and sustained lasting ability.
  • To make eye makeup last, use an eye shadow primer, then apply a coat of sheer, neutral- colored powdered shadow as a base. Next, apply eyeliner, using a liquid or gel liner for longer lasting hold. Then, add another light layer of powdered eye shadow, and follow the next tip for your lashes.
  • For gorgeous lashes all day, heat an eyelash curler with a blow dryer, then carefully crimp your eyelashes twice ; once in the middle, and once near the tips of the lashes. Dip a shadow brush in loose, translucent powder, closing your eyes one at a time, and dust the tops of the lashes. This will make your mascara last longer. Apply a coat of mascara, let dry, then apply another coat. Or you can use waterproof mascara, in which case you would apply the layers quickly before it dries to prevent clumping.
  • For the cheeks, use a cream or gel cheek stain instead of cream or powdered blushes.
  • For your lips, first apply foundation over the lips. Then, line and fill in the lips with a lip pencil. Use a brush to apply a coat of lipstick, as this allows the pigment to set in deeper into your lips. Blot, and then apply another coat followed by a light layer of gloss. For a faster approach, you can also use a long- lasting, all-day lipstick, but be sure to moisturize the lips well first as these products can dry out the lips.
  • Another tip to consider is to use oil- free formulated makeup, as these do not smear or “slide- off” the face as easily.
  • Some makeup artists also use airbrush makeup for an all-day look. This is commonly used in television and film due to its ability to cover and make the skin appear flawless. When silicone- based airbrush makeup is used, the results can last up to 24 hours, making touch-ups a thing of the past. Makeup artists also commonly recommend airbrush makeup for brides on their wedding day due to it being smudge and waterproof as well as its lasting capability.

The above mentioned makeup artist tips should help you get ready for that special day when you need your makeup to last or simply to help your everyday makeup last throughout your normal day no matter what climate your face is subjected to.
